Sacred Pathways

Gary Thomas

Synopsis: Gary Thomas walks us through nine different worship personality types.

Rating: G

One day, I was having lunch with a dear friend, and trusted mentor. I confided in her that because I wasn’t raised in the church, I often worry that I’m “behind” in my faith, and struggle with feeling like my prayer and devotional life were not “good enough”. She encouraged me to read this book. I’m very glad I did.

In many ways, this was spot on, exactly what I needed to hear. There isn’t just one right way to pray and worship. We all have different ways of approaching God, and they aren’t wrong just because they aren’t one size fits all.

I found it very interesting to learn about the nine different personalities (or as Thomas calls them, the Sacred Pathways), and really even learned some things about myself in the process. The area I expected to fit into at the beginning of the book, was not the type I found myself resonating most with later on.

That being said, there were a couple of things that I didn’t love. First, there were a few parts that felt like the dragged on. I really felt like many of the chapters could have been a little shorter. Second, Thomas tapped into one of my pet peeves: Don’t assume because someone shares your faith, that they share your politics. I actually skipped over the majority of one of the chapters because this was really getting on my nerves.

The overall message of this book is spectacular and I think incredibly important. Christians need to hear that worship is not one way or the highway. Jesus meets us where we are. If you are like me, and have struggled with feeling like you aren’t “doing it right” when it comes to prayer and worship, I strongly recommend reading this book. Minor annoyances aside, the content is good.
