The Book of Two Ways

Jodi Picoult

Synopsis: Dawn was studying for her Doctorate in Egyptology, living her dream when her world was thrown off balance, and she had to walk away from her degree, Egypt, and the man she loved. 15 years later, she is a wife and a mother and has a job she loves as a Death Doula, helping people prepare for their death. But she has never forgotten what she gave up. After surviving a plane crash, Dawn must decide: Does she go back to the life she has know for the last 15 years? Or pick up where she left off 15 years ago?

I haven’t been writing this blog long enough for you all to know this, but. I. Love. Jodi. Picoult. I have a stack of her books and they are some of my all time favorites. The Book of Two Ways is no exception. However, this book did differ somewhat from most of her other works that I’ve read.

Picoult’s books are always very emotional. They make you question what you have always believed, and consider perspectives that you may not have before. And in that respect, The Book of Two Ways is no different. However, in this case, the emotion is almost entirely built around her relationships, past and present. There’s no major courtroom drama. Honestly, I don’t feel like there’s a lot of big drama in it. It’s all about the heart, and the emotions, and the questions of “what if?”. It’s more subtle than her other books, but just as wonderful. It is also a little steamier than any of her other books I’ve read.

In all other regards, this book is classic Jodi Picoult. She draws you in. She makes you feel. She pulls you in different directions. In the beginning, you have one opinion and somewhere in the middle you start second guessing yourself. As torn as Dawn was in the book, I was equally as torn about which decision I wanted her to make! (I will admit, I was rooting for one way over the other, but I’ll let you draw your own conclusions…)

Oh Jodi… Once again, you made me laugh, you broke my heart, you made me swoon, you made me crazy, made me question my morals and left me wanting more. Thank you.

Check it out, friends. If you are a fan of Jodi Picoult, you won’t be disappointed. And if you’ve never read any of her books, I strongly suggest picking one up at your earliest convenience. Like Now. Go. Order one. Right now. You can thank me later.
