It’s Not Supposed to Be This Way

Lysa TerKeurst

Synopsis: A spiritual guide to finding God in the midst of disappointment.

What a timely read. If there was ever a year for this book, it’s 2020! But really, who hasn’t ever experienced a huge loss, or massive disappointment and wondered “Where are you, God?” If you have ever asked that question, you need to pick up this book.

TerKeurst does an incredible job of examining situations and explaining not only WHY bad things happen, but where God is in the midst of it. She uses personal examples to show how God was working in and through her struggles, even when she couldn’t see it at first. She reflects on these moments and sees where God was holding her hand, when she felt abandoned.

I am so grateful that I read this book when I did. It was absolutely the message I needed to hear. At a time when so many of us are separated from our family and our friends, or struggling to make ends meet, or grieving the loss of a loved one, It’s Not Supposed to Be This Way is a beacon of hope.

One of the things I absolutely love about TerKeurst is her unfailing honesty. She doesn’t pretend to have it all figured out. She puts herself out there “warts and all”, as the saying goes. She is transparent and vulnerable, in the most beautiful of ways.

If you have ever found yourself wondering, “Where are you, God?”, I implore you to pick up this book, and don’t put it down. It may just be the lifeline you are looking for to grasp on to.
