I always find it somewhat difficult to write a review on the first book of a series. It’s hard to comment too much on a story that isn’t finished yet. So let me start by saying this: The Kingdom of Light series is off to a great start!

The beginnings of books like this tend to be a little on the slower side to me because there’s so much ground work to get through; particularly so when you have a complex plot like this one. But it’s all necessary. I didn’t feel like it dragged on or spent too much time dwelling on inconsequential details.

The Kingdom of Light is also an example of a book where the further in you read the more hooked you are. About halfway through, the plot really takes hold, and after that I did not want to put it down! There are some really great twists and surprises that caught me off guard. It’s the kind of book that has you questioning which characters to “trust”!

My only minor critique is the different perspectives. I really enjoy multi-perspective books (this is no exception), there is just a LOT of different perspectives. To be honest, I’m even struggling to call it a critique. Because even though the different voices were a bit excessive, I can also understand WHY the choice was made. There is SO MUCH going on in the plot, and SO much happening in different arenas, that I think certain important details would have been missed had Mason NOT included those extra viewpoints.

I am anxiously waiting for Book Two! I cannot WAIT to find out what happens! Octavia D. Mason is seriously helping to change my opinion of Sci-fi/Fantasy!
