Review: My Journey Back to Faith
My Journey Back to Faith
Jessi Hersey
Synopsis: A book of poetry based on a variety of topics from love, to Black Lives Matter, to faith and more.
Rating: G
One of the things I think makes for great poetry is the author’s vulnerability. I don’t think any other form of writing gives you a better sense of who the writer is like poetry does. To write poetry is to give the world a look at your most intimate self, the good and bad. If this painted picture of the author is accurate, then Ms. Hersey is sensitive, thoughtful, faith-driven, and compassionate.
The poems in My Journey Back to Faith are filled with calls to love, whether for one another, one’s self, or God. The topics vary, but to me, love felt like the overwhelming theme. The poems feel as if there is a sweetness and a light that comes through in them. They are very calming.
There were some that I wished Hersey had gone a little deeper with; like the story told in the poem was only touching the surface. It may have been more poignant had she chosen to give a little bit more, but these are by far the exception.
If you are a fan of poetry, looking for a light, uplifting, easy read, My Journey Back to Faith is a great choice!
