I’m going to be honest with you. This is the first poetry book I’ve read, probably since high school, and my first book ever of “modern” poetry. I can tell you this much– after reading this book, it will not be that long before I pick up another one!
I absolutely loved Surviving Home. It is filled with deep emotion and brutal honesty. Some of the poems are packed with such raw emotion, that I had to take extra time to process them. Every single line has intention behind it. Each phrase serves a purpose.
When I started reading Surviving Home, I thought it would be an easy book to read, while reading a novel as well. I figured it would be easy enough to just read a poem or two a day, and slowly work my way through it while still reading a novel. It was a good idea in theory. I wasn’t accounting for the fact that I wouldn’t WANT to ONLY read one or two poems. I just wanted to keep reading! I couldn’t stop myself.
Caynon is a powerful, clear voice. Her words fashion a razor sharp knife that cuts clean to the heart. She masterfully constructs her poems with an eloquence that had me completely riveted.
I would strongly recommend readers to give this one a shot. Even if you aren’t typically one who reads poetry, I would encourage you to step outside your norm, and try it anyway! Surviving Home is an important piece of literature, and one we can all learn something from.
Thank you for this review. It’s been forever since I’ve read poetry too, but this sounds like a good one to check out
